What is YSUN? YSUN is a platform that gathers Syrian young architects and urbanists to discuss, exchange ideas, analyze and produce a range of knowledge forms related to sustainable just urbanism. The platform is there to collectively reflect on the future of Syrian cities.
Ousama Abo Samra
Architect
Osama is a Syrian architect that spent the first 3 years of his architectural studies in Damascus, Syria, before moving to France to continue his studies and get his Masters in Architectural Studies from the ENSA – Paris-Belleville in 2017. Since then he has had an additional masters in Building-Information-Modelling in 2018 from ENSA - Marne-la-Valée, as professional practicing degree in architecture from ENSA-Val-de-Seine. He is currently working in the architectural company Bechu-et-Associés that is based in Paris. In parallel, Osama produces artistic illustrations and digital art of social and architectural commentary on Syria

Sarah is a graduate of Damascus University, Faculty of Architecture in 2015. She is currently a Master's student in the “Ecole Nationale Supérieur d’Architecture” of Paris-Belleville. The topic of her master evolves around the alternative fabrication of the city for a more inclusive city, In an attempt to seek new means that could allow marginal classes to have access to properties. It tackles a precise example of a group of people, in need for a space, who weave their wills together to build a common space on an abandoned site (an example of hundreds throughout France ). |

Hazem Raad
Urban Development Practitioner
Syrian architect graduated the Faculty of Architecture at Damascus University on 2015, became a Chevening Scholar in 2017 and finished an MSc in Building and Urban Design in Development late 2018. Specializing in the prospects of urbanization of the camp space, Hazem has been working with Oxfam Syria, and recently joined the team of the EU Proactive Resilience project implemented by Oxfam, a pioneer sustainability development project funded by the EU. Hazem has worked with several urban and architectural activism collectives, had his work exhibited in The Bartlett and Cambridge University among others, and is a published analyst on the critique of development in the Middle East, and the power structures of the domain. |

Atayants Architectural Studio since 2017, with a specialty in execution
drawings for residential buildings, hotels, and churches, in addition to 3D
modeling, rendering, and concept album development. Laya holds an undergraduate degree in Architecture from Damascus University, Syria, and a Master’s degree with excellence (Red Diploma) in Architecture from Saint Petersburg State University of Architecture and Civil Engineering (SPbGASU), Russia. Loris is currently a Master student at Szent István University in Hungary on a scholarship program. Studying Landscape Architecture and Garden Design. Graduated in 2015 from Damascus University with a Bachelor degree in Architecture. Majida Malo is an architect and urban planner living in Paris, France, from Damascus Syria. Currently working at Bechu+associes on a fulltime job after she obtained her master’s degree of urban design from the school of architecture of Belleville 2022. In 2021 She had work experience along with her studies at SCAU architectural and urban firm.In Damascus 2019 she worked as an architect at Takla and co and as a research assistant at IWlab and participated on their behalf in a conference at OIB in Lebanon.She worked on different subjects like informal settlements and informal expansions of Damascus, while in her master’s graduation project she studied the role of digital design tools to shape the urban morphology with consideration of the microclimate and the effect of urban heat islands.

Mary is currently working for a global design lead firm in Boston, Massachusetts and holds a Masters degree in Architecture from Miami University, after attending undergraduate studies for five years at Damascus University. Sammy Zarka

SAMMY ZARKA (Paris, June 30, 1992) is a Syrian Landscape Architect and Designer.
His academic work reflects on the ephemeral state of our built environments; its fragility and sensitive social aspect. Having studied in Belgium and Italy, he holds a masters and two bachelor degrees in Sustainable architecture and landscape design. Professionally he designs exhibitions collaborating with international art museums, including Fondazione Prada and has worked with Italo Rota for the design and execution of the Italian pavilion at EXPO 2020.He is an adjunct lecturer at NABA university in Milan teaching the course of new technologies of set design and opera.

Yara Al Heswani

Yara Alheswani is an architect and urban researcher. She holds a Diploma degree in Architecture from Damascus University in 2013. She worked at Damascus University as a researcher and teaching assistant. She holds a Master's degree of Theories and History of Architecture from Damascus University, awarded in 2018. She is interested in urban researches that studies the relations between humans and their urban environment, spatial changes during conflicts. Academic tutor and researcher, PhD degree Candidate at the Faculty of Architecture, Damascus University, Syria, with a Master’s degree in Architecture and Urban Design. Previously worked in architectural practice and participated in national and international competitions with award-winning projects. As well as involvement in several trainings, symposiums and workshops locally and abroad as a student, trainee, supervisor or organizer. Samer has interests about memory in cities and architecture and recently published in MIT Thresholds 50: Before/After, The MIT Press 2022.

Dana is an Architect. She holds a Diploma of Architecture from Damascus University. She has practiced Architecture in several firms in Damascus, Participated in Several Arab and International Competitions and workshops. She is a former administrative member and Journalist at Twenty-Two Architectural Group. She has founded “Twinkle Kids Club” (A startup aims to raise kids’ knowledge about architecture). Recently She is a volunteer at the organization of Syrian Researchers. Dana is interested in working on topics related to urban issues in East Mediterranean region Like: (the environmental issue of “Shrinked Green Landscapes”, “Human Rights in post-war Syrian cities” and the issue of “The Syrian Architectural and urban Identity and building Culture”.
Diana Salahieh
Landscape Architect
Diana comes from a background in landscape architecture and planning. She attained her bachelor's degree from the American University of Beirut and her master's degree from the Czech University of Life Sciences in Prague. Her research interests lie in post-conflict recovery, cultural heritage and identity, and urban public spaces. She will begin her Ph.D. studies at the Faculty of Architecture at the Czech Technical University in Prague, specializing in concepts of walkability and urban acupuncture.
Dima Almadi
Architect
Dima obtained a bachelor’s degree of architecture from Damascus university in 2019. Since then, she worked in different majors of architecture (Restoration, Interior design and shop drawing). Considering her interest in the humanitarian sector, she volunteered in several places working with (street children, IDPs, and returnees). Dima is now working with Première Urgence Internationale as a site engineer in Rural Damascus. She is quite interested in the post-war recovery movement as she is a part of the rehabilitation process that is happening in partially destroyed areas. Dima is focusing now on the challenges of the reconstruction and Urban recovery process that are facing Syria and the impact those challenges have on people.
Duha AlNouri

Duha is an architecture graduate of Damascus university, class of 2022. She participated in several urban relevant workshops. In 2021 she started to research street trade in Damascus, during a workshop organized by Urbegony. In 2022 she did her graduation thesis discussing street trade and public spaces. She is interested in architecture that falls neither in the solid nor the void, but rather a middle ground in between.
Humam Alsalim

Born in Damascus,1992. Humam Alsalim is a Berlin based architect, curator and digital artist. He completed a five years program in architectural engineering in Damascus University and has worked since then as an Architect/BIM manager in multiple offices between Damascus and Berlin. While studying architecture in Damascus he started an online project for the archiving and promotion of Syrian art. With Khaled Youssef, he later co-founded the Syria.Art Non-profit association in Nice, France. The association organizes multi-medium art exhibitions, film screenings and readings for Syrian born artists and creatives. He also founded the online Cyrrus Gallery for the sale of art from the middle east. His first exhibition was a touring exhibition with the title "Behind the Lines", the exhibition started in 2016 in Penticton and traveled 18 museums and galleries in British Columbia, Yukon and Calgary. It included over 100 artworks from 20 Syrian Artists. He also worked with different non-Profits, museums and galleries to curate exhibitions in Wales, Romania, Germany, France, South Korea and the US.
Layal Al Haddad

Architect builder, graduated from ENSA Paris-Belleville in France in 2020. She worked on the appropriation of vacant urban space (squats, urban wastelands). Currently, Layal works on a voluntary basis in eco-construction with techniques developed in France for the construction of individual or collective bio-sourced habitats.
Loujayn Alashhab

Loujayn is a Syrian Austrian architect and urban planner with a bachelor’s degree (B.Sc.) from the Vienna University of Technology, Austrian public University, faculty of architecture and regional planning.
She started in 2019 at the PsB-Baumanagement, an architectural office, specialized in developing, managing, and executing of modern architectural projects in Austria, as a project assistant. Now she's heading the planning department and in charge of the Authorities/Landlords coordination.
In 2019 the Institute of History of Art, Building Archaeology and Restoration, at the vienna university of technology, hosted the exhibition "transformation tradition. mosques in transition" where she participated with her research on Al Ghadir mosque in Tehran and its relation to critical regionalism architecture. A publication accompanied the exhibition.

Mudar Obaid Dabbous

Mudar is an architect and urban designer. He holds a BA in Architecture from Damascus University and a Master’s Degree in Architecture and Urban Design from Potsdam University of Applied Sciences in Germany. Throughout his years of work experience, he worked in diverse architectural fields at different architecture firms in Berlin.. Mudar has previously facilitated and participated in workshops surrounding the role of architecture in post-conflict zones, in Syria and abroad. Outside of the office, Mudar co-founded Aman Collective, a social entreprise aiming to support the mental health of Arabic speakers in exile.

I founded in 2020 an initiative to support social and environmental responsibility for the built environment by using low- technology, a human centred approach with bottom-up procedures. Qusay Awad
Architect
Qusay Awad (B. 1995, As-Suwayda, Syria) is an architect and multidisciplinary artist working with spatial storytelling through 3d design, video and sound. He is member of Syrbanism the Young Syrian Urbanists, C1 collective and scholarship holder by FES.
Awad began studying architecture in 2013 at Damascus University and completed his studies in Germany at the TU Braunschweig. Under the supervision of arch. prof. Volker Staab, he completed his bachelor degree in 2019 and began his M.A. programme in April 2020. As a B.A. Awad worked by Staab Architekten (Bauhaus Archiv project), Czaia Architekten and Carpaneto Schöningh Architekten.
In addition to his work in the field of architecture, Awad is also working in the field of video and sound art. Awad's artworks were presented at Documenta 15 in Kassel, Maxim Gorki Theater, CTM-Festival and ZKU in Berlin.
Rahaf Yousef

Rahaf Yousef is an architect and urban researcher. She has a Diploma in Architecture and a Master’s degree in Regional Planning from Damascus University. Rahaf has 5+ years of work experience in the academic field as a tutor assistant and scientific coordinator for the Master's program of Landscape planning at Damascus University. Her research interest is in the people-place relationship, its dynamic nature, and challenges during conflicts, which she is currently working on within her Ph.D. research at the Institute of Landscape Architecture and Urban Planning in Budapest, Hungary.
Saeed Asaeed

Saeed is an architect from Damascus, He graduated from Damascus University in 2011 and since then he has collected experiences in the fields of architecture, urban design, heritage studies, and interior design. Currently he is doing his Master degree in Germany at BT-U Cottbus University, the master program is World Heritage Studies. His research interest lies in post-conflict recovery, cultural heritage (tangible & intangible), identity, urban heritage and architectural conservation. Saeed has also the title of working student at (DGI Bauwerk) architecture office in Berlin and works in the firefighting section. The current projects he is working on are world heritage sites in Berlin and Brandenburg and other projects.

Saeed is an Architect at Gensler in Paris, France with more than 6 years of professional experience working for a wide range of projects. He worked at different architectural firms in France, Lebanon and Syria, and has undertaken and participated in the delivery of a number of projects including, offices, housing and commercial projects on different scales across the Middle East and Europe. Saeed has acquired a multidisciplinary experience combined with international exposure and leadership, academic and professional research skills, with Graduate Masters in architecture from Paris - Val de Seine School of Architecture, and Professional Practice and Management in Architecture - HMONP degree from Versailles School of Architecture.
Shaden Sharaf Eddin

Shaden works as a researcher and teaching assistant in the Faculty of Architecture at Damascus University, Syria. She holds a bachelor’s degree in architecture from Damascus University and finished an MSc in construction and execution sciences, specializing in digital tectonics. Main interest is research in structural and Urban Design. Supervised and participated in many workshops at Damascus University and in a collaboration with European Universities such as the University of Oregon-American. Besides working as an associate member with Urbegony “Architects without Borders”, in observing spatial and urban changes in the built and social environment, her work was exhibited at the University of Cambridge and Università Iuav di Venezia -Italy. She was recently awarded First Place in the counter-territories competition with the Tajarrod foundation.
Tarek Aldeeb

Tarek is an architect and Details designer. Holding a Bachelor's in Architecture from Damascus University and a Master’s Degree in Architecture and Urban Design from Potsdam University of Applied Sciences in Germany. Throughout his years of work experience, he works in Turkey and in Germany in various architectural firms. Tarek has participated in many Workshops and competitions during his study time and after graduation. For the last 4 years, he was specialized in Facades Design and technique. Outside the office, Tarek follows the Art movements inside the Berlin Museums and reads about politics and modern conflicts.
Wafaa Sharaf Aldeen Abo Fakher

Wafaa is an Architect, researcher, and teaching assistant. She has graduated in 2017 from Damascus University, then she completed her master’s degree program in 2021 where she specialized in post-disaster housing and public participation. She has worked as a designer for more than 4 years in Syria, and as a researcher for one year with Ettijahat institution in Lebanon. Furthermore, she participated in many national and international architectural workshops in Syria, Lebanon, Jordan, and Germany.
Walaa Hajali

Walaa Hajali is an architect specialized in climate-responsive Design. She holds a bachelor’s degree in Architecture from Damascus University and master’s degree in Environmental Design and Engineering from UCL, UK. In addition, Walaa explored the interrelationship between domestic buildings, people, and climate in Syria as part of her second master's degree in Architecture from Manchester School of Architecture, UK. Walaa is currently a Project Engineer at Transsolar in Germany, where she develops strategies for low energy and climate neutral buildings in different scales and regions of the world.

Talah Alshami
Architect
Currently lives in Athens, Greece, Talah Alshami is an architect since 2017 with a bachelor’s degree in Architecture from Damascus University with her graduation project honourably mentioned in the Tamayouz award of 2019. She is a Master student of the Erasmus+ Joint Master’s program ALA “Architecture Landscape Archaeology” at the University of Sapienza in Rome, Italy and the National Technical University of Athens, Greece.From 2018 to 2021 she worked for NOAH Architects, Takla Group, Mujeeb AI Company as an architect and graphic designer, and for IW Lab as a research assistant. She was part of two research publications under IW lab namely, Weaving Reeds, and Spatial Justice. The former included participation in fabrication with an artisan and reporting the process of collecting reeds and crafting them. The latter was presented at the National Conference of Rebuilding held in Damascus in 2019 and criticized the new urban planning policies.She started a social-media-initiative to promote industrial heritage of Syria “Industrial Square Meter”. Interested in heritage, societal development, and cultural studies along with architecture. Her Master’s thesis project deals with the morphology and transformation of landscape in an archaeological context in Hagia Triada, Crete. She loves drawing and writing, mostly expressively and subjectively, around societal, architectural, or urban issues. She aims to establish her artistic career alongside architecture.
Ghaith Alkhateeb
Landscape Architect
Ghaith is a landscape architect based in Tartu, Estonia.He has a bachelor’s degree in Architecture from Al-Baath University and is pursuing a master's degree in Landscape Architecture at the Estonian University of Life Sciences. Ghaith participated in projects and competitions across Europe such as Culture Digihack for Digitizing Cultural Heritage, WAVE ERASMUS Project, LE:NOTRE Landscape Forum, and Prototyping Future Cities Competition. Also, he is actively involved in training and voluntary works across the Baltic States. With a three-year professional experience with NGOs in Syria in infrastructure and monitoring & evaluation, Ghaith has developed a thorough understanding of the ecological, economic and social dynamics that influence landscape-scale management. Thus, he devotes his time, knowledge, and skills to promoting an effective engagement of stakeholders in collaborative management of the landscape. Ghaith is continuing what he had started earlier; working for enhancing the living environment to be more inclusive and diverse.
