Public Works Studio, in collaboration with Professor Heba Bou Akar from Columbia University, organized a series of online seminars that delved into experiences, frameworks, and methodologies for addressing the challenges of urban realities in the Arab region. The goal of these seminars was to analyze and comprehend the growing political involvement of urban practitioners and activists in Arab countries, along with their capacity to organize and mobilize.
Syrbanism
actively participated in the symposium focused on local engagement. The
discussions covered practices related to the use and management of public
spaces at the local level, especially considering privacy concerns. The
symposium also addressed the tools and capabilities that render urban planning
vital to the democratic process rather than a tool of power. The role of
municipalities in these efforts, the accumulation of knowledge, and the
development of creative approaches in local governance were key topics of
exploration.
